Progression climbing

For those with some previous experience who are looking to move their climbing on, consolidate key skills, and get some quality routes ticked.

North Wales is the perfect location for these courses, the variety of world class venues to choose from is second to none. Wild sea cliff adventures, roadside bolt clipping, bouldering, big mountain crags, single pitch test pieces – it’s all here within easy reach.

Learn through experience. Small group size and great instructors guarantee a productive learning experience.

We enjoy working on these courses because we simply love seeing people take on the new information and techniques and improve so quickly.

The progression courses can be run over two, three, four or five days, to suit your availability. They are run as bespoke courses around your climbing aspirations.

TWO DAY COURSE

On day one we’ll typically visit a single pitch crag to refresh skills, allowing us to see where you’re at in your climbing and where you want to be.  Day two will see us at a multi-pitch crag seconding longer routes and considering some of the other details of staying safe and climbing well.

On the two day course we will have time to look at…
The climbing environment
Being hazard aware, staying safe at the top of a crag, climbing etiquette, using a guidebook, grades and our impact on the landscape.

Equipment use and selection
Harnesses and helmets, different types of ropes, protection (nuts, cams, hexes and slings) and belay devices.

Using the rope
Belaying (holding the rope) from above and below the climber.

Anchors
Selecting bombproof anchors and creating solid belays, both in, and out of reach. Tips for keeping belays organised and, maybe even tangle free.

Abseiling
Setting up a retrievable abseil and using a prusik to stay safe while coming down. Essential skills, especially for sea cliff climbing and longer routes.

Communication
What to do when you can’t be heard or seen by your belayer.

Three, four and five-day courses

Longer courses allow you to get into real depth and see rapid progression.

Movement skills
This means precise footwork and techniques such as bridging, jamming and lay-backing. Equally, it means relaxing, breathing and starting to feel at home in a challenging vertical world!

Problem (avoidance) and solving skills
Leave with a bag of tricks to keep life on the crag slick, efficient and safe!

A wide variety of venues and classic routes

Get lots of mileage on different rock types, making you a more rounded climber. From jugs on Gogarth to slate micro crimps – brilliant!

The opportunity to tick some North Wales classics and if you’re ready and want to lead we can even have a go at that as well!

All round mountaineering skills
If desired we can spend a day developing all round mountaineering skills on a tricky scramble. Bridge the gap between traditional climbing and mountaineering.
