Hill Walking and Navigation

Gain the confidence to step off the beaten track in Snowdonia.

Walking in the mountains is ace!

Everyone ventures into the hills with different motivations; serenity, personal challenge, stunning views, fresh air… the list goes on.

There’s something very special about standing on a summit and the journey you’ve been on to get there. In fact, the journey to us is more important than being at the top, it’s what you encounter as you travel that ultimately makes being in the hills so rewarding.

Summit famous peaks and explore hidden corners

Guided walking adventures

These days are about getting into the wonderful mountains we’re lucky enough to call home. Maybe you have a peak in mind, and need an experienced guide alongside to provide confidence, and develop your skills. Or, maybe you’d like to be shown some of the quieter magical corners you’d be unlikely to discover on your own. We can help!

Use the enquiry form below or book now tabs!

Navigation training courses

Starting from the absolute basics, we’ll develop your skills, and take in some great mountain walks at the same time. By the end you’ll know your re-entrants from your spurs! We’ll help you create a navigational toolbox, which you can then dip in and out of, as terrain and conditions dictate.

How we run your course…

Walking and navigation courses last from one day to a full five days. It’s up to you. You can choose a date from below or request your own dates.

We want to share our enthusiasm for the hills, and give you the skills to become independent hill walkers and mountaineers. We’ll listen to what you’d like to gain from your time with us; from a first foray into the hills, right through to perfecting night navigation for a looming Mountain Leader assessment, we’ll help you to develop the skills you’re after.

The learning experience…

Through careful selection of itinerary and by creating a supportive, relaxed atmosphere, you can take control, and get the most out of your time with us. Courses are run in a holistic manner, with longer courses allowing a greater consolidation of skills and more advanced techniques to be covered.

Is a Gaia Adventures course right for me?

If you want to feel safe, have fun and learn lots… then yes, it’s for you! We pride ourselves on providing high-quality courses adapted to your needs and wants- whether that’s learning to navigate in the ‘clag’, or walking up Snowdon as your first ever mountain.

Courses are run at your pace; if you want to walk the 14 Welsh 3000s in a day that’s great, we’ll make sure we get an early night! Equally, if you’d  rather explore gentle forgotten valleys, then we’re keen to share some secrets!

What happens on the day – logistics.

Each day begins at 9.15am, normally at a local café, where we can have a chat and discuss your aspirations. We’ll talk through the weather forecast, how it relates to upland areas, and pass on route-planning tips.  Then we’ll head out and onto the hills.

We’re generally off the hill at 4.30pm and soon scoffing cake and drinking tea- you’re on holiday after all! We can then reflect on what we’ve done and chat through what you’d like to work towards the next day.

At the end of the course, we’ll review all we’ve covered and suggest the next steps.

Snowdonia National Park is a hill walker’s paradise; with over 90 summits of 2000 feet or more, and a plethora of walks, from rolling grassy plateaus, to soaring rock ridges. There truly is something for everyone. Most courses are based between the three main mountain chains of the Snowdon Range, the Glyderau, and the Carneddau, each with its own unique charms.

The mountain environment is a special one. Snowdonia’s rich geological and cultural past has created a beautiful area packed with peaks, valleys, lakes and woodland. It is home to rare plants, wildlife and habitats, which we like to point out. The industrial and farming histories have left their own intriguing footprints. Whether it’s seeing the vibrant Sundew, or a mesmerising Brocken Spectre, spending time in these mountains is always inspiring. It’s why we live here!
