Wild camping at its wildest - overnight on a portaledge, suspended above the sea.
” The whole experience is so well thought through and carefully put together, they have thought of everything.” Namtan April 2018
A surprise 30th birthday present for my boyfriend who said it was the best present he had ever had. Stunning views, completely safe and thoroughly enjoyable experience.” Vic, 2017
Do you have what it takes to sleep high above the sea, suspended in mid air? There’s only one way to find out.
My son also has a fantastic head for heights and so he also slept the night on the “ledge” and what a night they had. Thanks to Sam for looking after them so well – a night to remember.” Bennett, 2017
No other company provides such an experience in the UK. Imagine the bragging rights afforded by spending the night high on a vertical cliff face! Original, adventurous and hugely memorable. How many people do you know who have slept on the side of a cliff?
Very impressed with our instructor, glad we managed to learn something as well as having an awesome experience.” Harry, 2016
Sunny afternoon slips into evening and a beautiful sunset. A rich palette of reds and purples contrast with the azure sea lapping below. The sun’s vibrancy fades, revealing a black velvet sky studded with stars. An unforgettable experience.
As with rock climbing and abseiling, it may seem dangerous, but you’ll quickly relax. We work hard to make sure we keep everyone as safe as possible, at all times. You will be in a controlled environment and safely attached at all times, including while you’re in your sleeping bag.
A staff member will be present at all times during the adventure. They will ensure you’re safe throughout and put you at ease should you be facing any anxieties. We want you to have a positive, amazing experience and will do whatever we can to achieve this.
That said, this is not for the faint-hearted. Abseiling down to the ledge and managing the extra stimulus of a swirling sea and swaying ledge present challenges to most. We’ve found that though initially intimidated, people soon ‘settle’ into the ledge; quickly becoming accustomed to the positions and realising they’re safe.
We’ll meet up, close to the cliff camping location in the late afternoon (the exact time varies depending on the time of year) and talk through what to expect, do a check of your kit and put to rest any questions.
Before heading down to the ledge we will spend time rock climbing. This gives the opportunity to climb some great routes (obviously!), get to know each other, and pick up some skills for being on the ledge. By the time it comes to setting up the ledge, you will have learnt to trust the rope, which is often the greatest challenge.
We’ll aim to have the ledge set up and organised in time to catch the sunset, which you can enjoy with a hearty hot meal. We don’t skimp on good food- it will be hot and tasty. As the evening proceeds, it’ll be time for a hot chocolate or small sip of something stronger to warm your cockles.
Lets be honest, if you’re looking for the best nights sleep you’ve ever had this is probably not the place to find it but that’s not what people come for. Come for a truly unforgettable night of open skies, shooting stars, moonlight glistening on the water, the sound of waves lapping (or sometimes crashing) below, fresh air on your face. A real adventure that’s surprisingly accessible.
In the morning you’ll wake in a stunning position to see the world come alive. A morning coffee or tea will help you to leave the sanctuary of your sleeping bag. It takes a short while to pack up, ensure we’re leaving the campsite as we found it and make our way back, across the fields to the cars. We’re normally away and back to the cars by around 0800 as we tend to rise early with the light. tThe day is then your own.
What is a portaledge?
Portaledges are portable ledges, invented to provide climbers with something flat to sleep on when they’re on a multi day, vertical route.
Imagine a hammock large enough to accommodate a few people, super strength textiles and you’re not far from it. Some even come with fancy cup holders!
They allow comfort and relaxation in places you wouldn’t otherwise expect.
What about the bathroom?
This is one of the first questions people ask. Before heading to the cliff for the night there is an opportunity to use a real toilet which we strongly recommend. Should you need to go during the night it’s not a problem.
You won’t be far from the top of the cliff and it’s just a case of climbing back up to the make shift toilet.
It’s really important that we all tread lightly on the amazing places we visit. With this in mind we do not leave any human waste at the wild campsite.
What kit do we need to bring with us?
Here’s the kit list for you.
Portaledges have waterproof covers, so should the weather turn at all, it becomes a bit like being in a tent. Most of the wind and rain is kept out, and you’ll feel cosy and comfy in your suspended bubble. A warming mug of coffee or hot chocolate will never have tasted so good! Every night on a portaledge is a unique adventure in every sense.
If the heavens really open we do reserve the option of cancelling the camp – in this unfortunate case we will offer an alternative date to suit you or return your fee.
We run these experiences on Anglesey’s coast, which frequently provides much warmer and drier conditions than anywhere else. It is ideally suited.
Prices for your adventure…
The recommended minimum group size is two so you can share the experience. Because we like to keep it personal and safe, the biggest group we can accommodate is three. Simple.
